The World Cup Advert That Out-Nike’d Nike

Forget about that Nike 2014 FIFA World Cup television commercial. The advert that has got everyone talking is the movie for Beats by Dr Dre (and the brand isn’t even an official world cup sponsor!)

The big question that this flick asks is: “How do you get your head in the game?” And, let’s face it, the world cup is a big game.

Dr Dre has answered the question, definitively. With a five minute film which is nothing short of an epic. The protagonist in this commercial is Brazil’s Neymar Jr. The #GAMEBEFORETHEGAME for this athlete is to speak to his father. Neymar junior’s father is a legend – his advice is gorgeous, pure poetry.

But this ad doesn’t only feature Brazil. It is a multi-media effort (yes there’s a web site and social media circus that drives this campaign) where you can see Spain’s Fabregas kissing the ring his girlfriend gave him in ritual fashion before the game; Mexico’s Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez gets down on his knees and prays; while Uruguay’s Luis Suarez kisses a tattoo of his daughter and son’s names before he plays.

But that’s not all. There’s plenty more soccer stars in Dr Dre’s film. And… you’ll also catch a glimpse some of the world’s musical greats like lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj; as well as basketball legend LeBron James and tennis super-star Serena Williams.

Watch it and weep, Nike.

At the time of writing this post, the advert had 18,620,122 views. Not too shabby.
