David Beckham Cleared of Leading Teens Astray
David Beckham’s TV ad for whisky brand Haig Club has been cleared by the UK ASA. There had been two complaints from anti-alcohol abuse organisations that the former footballer’s endorsement promotes drinking among children.
The complaint was that as a global youth icon, Beckham was seen to be endorsing alcohol consumption. The simple fact is that (as the advertising watchdog found) Beckham’s target market is now 25-40 year olds — Beckham is simply “too old” to appeal to the youth of today.
