Design Indaba was full of surprises this year, and one that turned heads in the world of fashion was fashion and textile designer Sindiso Khumalo, with her fabric designs based on traditional Zulu and Ndebele design elements. However, Khumalo takes these elements into an entirely new realm — “embracing and subverting it,” as she puts it.

Born in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Khumalo now lives in Hackney, London. She studied architecture at the University of Cape Town before moving to London to work in the office of renowned architect David Adjaye. She cites the Bauhaus Movement as a strong influence in her work – in particular, its use of colour and emphasis on line and pared-down forms.
