The Annotated Net

The interactive web — the face of Web 2.1?

One of the early visions for the internet, was for web pages to have the ability to be annotated. The idea was for people to contribute to a subject within the text, adding further information, links to relevant articles, etc.

This didn’t happen with the technology of the time, but Marc Andreessen, founder of Netscape, has invested in Genius.com, a spin-off of Rap Genius, the song lyrics site: this functionality is part of its own site, and is testing for allowing for other web pages to be similarly annotated.

FastCompany explains more, and how it could bring about a new way in which we read the web. Read about it here.
