Direct foreign investment into Africa could help the global economy, as the returns should be good, and fuel a beneficial cycle. Diversification into non-extractive industries, driven by the slump in demand for commodities, is no. 1 on the list, and here agriculture will play a big part. But let’s hope that this doesn’t translate into turning Africans into menial labour — improved agriculture should benefit the overall wellbeing of Africans, not only in terms of food security, but also the total fiscal health of the general populace.
